Terrazzo Installation Guide
Substrate preparation, divider strips, grinding, polishing, and maintenance
Substrate Preparation
Substrate preparation is the most critical phase. The substrate must be structurally sound, flat within 1/4 inch in 10 feet, and free of oil, dust, curing compounds, and existing coatings. Minimum concrete compressive strength: 3,500 psi.
Divider Strip Layout
Divider strips serve both structural and aesthetic functions – controlling cracking and defining pattern areas. Common materials include white brass, zinc, aluminum, and plastic. Panel sizes should not exceed 36 square feet for cement systems.
Epoxy Terrazzo Installation Steps
- Prime substrate – Apply epoxy primer to prepared concrete slab
- Install divider strips – Set strips to approved layout drawings
- Apply epoxy matrix – Pour and trowel to 3/8 to 1/2 inch thickness
- Seed aggregate – Broadcast chips into wet matrix and roll to embed
- Cure – Allow 24 to 48 hours before grinding
- Rough grind – 16 to 30 grit to expose aggregate
- Fill voids – Apply grout coat to fill pinholes
- Medium grind – 50 to 80 grit to level and refine
- Fine grind and polish – 120 to 1500 grit to desired finish
- Seal – Apply sealer appropriate for traffic level
Maintenance
- Daily – Damp mop with pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid acidic cleaners.
- Periodic – Machine scrubbing and reapplication of sealer as needed.
- Annual – Professional burnishing in high-traffic areas.
- Long-term – Major restoration grinding every 20 to 30 years restores original appearance.
